Meta-owned instant messaging platform WhatsApp is testing an endemic dialer in the Android app. The dialer will allow users to dial phone numbers to initiate a call directly within the app without making it necessary to save the contact details in the address book first. For the unprepared, the current public version of the instant messaging app does not have a provision for direct calling despite support for both voice and video calls over the Internet. According to WhatsApp update tracker WABetaInfo, select users can access a floating call action button within the Calls tab. On tapping the button, users can dial a number that is not saved in the address book through the app. Additionally, a message shortcut has been added to the in-app dialer to let users send a message instead of calling after dialing the number. Users are also notified if the selected number is registered on WhatsApp to let them know if WhatsApp can be used for that number.

“This feature allows users to make calls directly, without adding contacts to their address book or manually opening a conversation. Additionally, after entering a phone number, users can quickly save it to the address book as a new contact or add it to an existing contact card,” the WABetaInfo report said.
Besides this, WhatsApp has also introduced a “Messaging Shortcut” within the dialer screen. This nifty feature allows users to swiftly switch from dialing to messaging, all within the same app. It’s a small but significant addition that further enhances the user experience.
